Johann Karl Friedrich zu Carolath-Beuthen (partly also von Schoenaich-Carolath ) (also Friedrich Johann Carl ) (born November 11, 1716 in Carolath ; † February 10, 1791 ) was a prince and freelance class lord and Prussian general.

Life

He was the son of Prince Hans Carl zu Carolath-Beuthen and his mother Amalia (born in Dohna-Schlodien ).

Carolath-Beuthen initially served in the imperial army before switching to Prussian service in 1741. He became a lieutenant colonel in the body carbine regiment. In 1743 he was appointed colonel and commander of the cuirassier regiment No. 8 (von Rochow).

He participated in the War of the Austrian Succession and distinguished himself in 1745 in particular in the Battle of Hohenfriedberg . In the same year he also received the Pour le Mérite . In 1751 he received his own cuirassier regiment (No. 9) . At the beginning of the Seven Years' War he was lieutenant general.

The judgment by Frederick II fluctuated. While he considered Schoenaich-Carolath in 1756 suitable to lead larger units, the king criticized in 1757 that he would not act energetically enough against the Austrians. The request for the award of the Black Eagle Order was therefore refused. In the same year Schoenaich-Carolath said goodbye.

After his father's death in 1763, he succeeded him as prince. He later served as envoy on various occasions. In 1764 he was sent to Warsaw on the occasion of Stanislaus II August Poniatowski's election as king . He received the Order of the Black Eagle in November 1764 when he returned from the election.

On December 17, 1749, he married Princess Johanna Wilhelmine von Anhalt-Köthen . From the marriage went Heinrich Karl Erdman, 3rd Prince of Carolath-Bytom forth.
