Life

Greiling was born as the son of the organ builder Johann Christoph Greiling (Greuling) († 1766) and his wife Anna Eva Dorothea, née Faccius. After the early death of her husband, the mother returned to her home village Weißenbrunn vorm Wald , where Greiling grew up in the house of his grandfather, the pastor Johann Faccius (1698–1775). At the age of 15 he was earmarked for a career as a teacher. Nevertheless, he first became secretary in Coburg and attended the Casimirianum at the same time . However, personal circumstances caused him to finish his philological studies and he began studying theology in Jena , which he finished in 1788.

Greiling first became court master in Döben, Saxony, and from 1793, in addition to his duties, also worked as a writer . In 1793 his first book appeared - On the final purpose of education and on the first principles of the science of it - with which he made a contribution to the implementation of the bourgeois educational philosophy by attempting to extend the principles of Kant's philosophy to the doctrine of education. His work Philosophical Letters on the Principles of Religious and Moral Education also served this purpose in 1794 .

In 1795 he went to Klein-Zschocher as a private tutor and in 1797 became pastor in Schochwitz , and in 1798 he went to Neu-Gattersleben as such . In Neugattersleben he wrote his practical pulpit lectures drawn from Kant's writings (1798–1804) and his theory of popularity (1805). In 1805 he received a senior court preacher position in Aschersleben , which he retained until his death. Here he wrote about The Biblical Women (1814-1815). In 1830 he was awarded an honorary doctorate in theology from the University of Jena . He was a member of the Aschersleben Freemason Lodge on the 3 clover leaves .
