Johannes Coglerus

Johann Cogeler , also Kogeler (* 1525 in Quedlinburg , † December 25, 1605 in Stettin ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran theologian and long-time general superintendent of Pomerania-Stettin .

Live and act

Johann Cogeler began studying in Wittenberg in 1545 , where he still experienced Martin Luther . After Luther's death, Cogeler went to Rostock in December 1547 , but then returned to Wittenberg in 1549. In 1550 he received his master's degree there. In June of the same year, the Philosophical Faculty in Rostock accepted him as Magister Wittenberge promotus . During his studies he was financially supported by the Pomeranian Duchess Anna .

In 1551, Johann Cogeler took over the post of rector at the city school in Pomerania's Stettin as the successor to Peter Artopaeus , but initially returned to Wittenberg after three years.

On July 27th, 1557 Johann Cogeler became second pastor at the Jakobikirche in Stettin and there he worked for the superintendent Paul von Rhoda . He only went to Wittenberg once when he received his theological doctorate there in 1558.

In 1572 Cogeler was appointed the new general superintendent of Pomerania-Stettin - to succeed Christoph Stymmel, who had left office due to illness . As the general superintendent of Pomerania-Stettin, he worked closely with the general superintendent of Pommern-Wolgast, Jacob Runge . Both were active against Calvinism , which threatened to gain a foothold in Pomerania. In 1595 Cogeler resigned as general superintendent, but remained active as a pastor. Cogeler's successor as general superintendent was Jakob Faber .

Cogeler published several theological writings. His best-known works are the Imagines elegantissimae , a five-part manual for teachers and preachers that shows the influence of Philipp Melanchthon on Cogeler. Several of his sermons, especially funeral sermons, are also printed.

Cogeler died in Stettin at the age of 80 and was buried in the Jakobikirche.
