Jacob Faber

Jakob Faber ( Latinized from Schmidt ), also Fabricius (born May 1, 1537 in Stargard (Pomerania) ; † August 20, 1613 in Stettin ) was a Lutheran theologian , doctor of theology (D.) and General Superintendent of Pomerania from 1595 to 1613 - Szczecin.

Live and act

Jakob Faber was born as the son of the Stargarder Jakob Schmidt and his wife Wolberta Walpurgis Hamel. Despite the early death of his father, he attended high school in his hometown and then began studying at the University of Wittenberg , then at the Magdeburg grammar school .

After another stay in Wittenberg, he took up a teaching position at Stargard in Freienwalde in 1559 and went to Landsberg ad Warthe as rector in 1560 .

In 1562 he was re-start studying, but instead as initially intended to Rostock to go, he learned on a visit to Greifswald the local General Superintendent of Pomerania-Wolgast, Jacob Runge , know that it the vice-principal at the local university mediated. In this position Jakob Faber received his master's degree in May 1562. The raging plague at the time forced him to leave the Hanseatic city. Faber went back to Wittenberg and continued his education there in the Hebrew language. This then established his call back to Greifswald, where he was given the professorship of the Hebrew and Greek languages. He also took on representation services for General Superintendent Runge.

In 1574 he was appointed to the parish of the Stargarder Marienkirche . Just three years later, Duke Johann Friedrich appointed him court preacher at the Castle Church in Stettin . Jakob Faber returned to Greifswald once more to receive his theological doctorate there in 1584. During his official business in Szczecin he was also the accompanying visitor to the general superintendent Runge and was given the supervision of the pedagogy in Szczecin .

In 1595 he was appointed general superintendent of Pomerania-Stettin to succeed Johann Cogeler . He held this office until his death. His successor in the office of general superintendent was David Reutzius .

Jakob Faber was married to Gertrud Runge (born August 17, 1553 in Greifswald; † July 25, 1600 in Stettin) since 1572. She was the daughter of the general superintendent Jacob Runge from Greifswald . The marriage resulted in 10 children. Of the four sons and six daughters, three children died before their mother. From the children we know:
