Jacob Runge

Jacob Runge (born June 15, 1527 in Stargard in Pomerania , † January 11, 1595 in Greifswald ) was a Lutheran theologian and general superintendent of the Reformation .

Life

As the son of a line weaver, Runge grew up in Stargard, attended school there and in 1542 came to the pedagogy in Stettin . From here he went to study theology in Wittenberg , where he could still hear Martin Luther . He gained a closer relationship with Philipp Melanchthon , but not with his compatriot Johannes Bugenhagen . Throughout his life he was convinced that Luther and Melanchthon agreed on teaching. The chaos of the war made him return to Greifswald . As early as 1547 he received a teaching post at the Artistic Faculty of the University of Greifswald , in 1552 he became parish priest at St. Marien and professor of theology and took part in all church events.

He turned down the call as pastor at St. Lorenz in Nuremberg . He promised general superintendent Johannes Knipstro to stay in Pomerania . In 1556 he became his successor. He went to the Worms Religious Discussion with Melanchthon (1557) and did not return home until January 1558. Great tasks awaited him here: defense against Andreas Osiander's ideas , care for the pastors, establishment of a new church order in 1563.

He proved his loyalty to his teacher Melanchthon by having the “Corpus doctrinae Philippicum” adopted as a teaching norm at the synod. Both as a professor of theology and as a general superintendent his position was not easy, but he was adept at clearing up dogmatic and legal difficulties. His last fight was for the recognition of the Concord Book . The death of Duke Ernst Ludwig and losses in his own family had made him tired after he had worked all his life for the Protestant Church in Pomerania and secured its development.

His epitaph is in the St. Nikolai Cathedral (Greifswald) .
