Johannes Garcaeus the Elder

Johannes Garcaeus the Elder (aka Johannes Gartze, * 1502 in Pritzwalk ; † August 24, 1558 in Neubrandenburg ) was a Lutheran theologian and reformer.

Life

Childhood and youth are shrouded in darkness. In 1521 he was matriculated in Wittenberg and will probably stay there until 1530. In the following years he worked at the Johanneum in Hamburg until he was appointed to the Petrikirche in Hamburg in 1534 . He stayed there until 1543. The dispute sparked by Johannes Aepinus about Christ's descent into hell (descensus ad inferos) made him leave Hamburg.

Garcaeus goes to Spandau , but is unable to gain solid ground there. At Easter 1546 he is back in the parish in Hamburg at St. Jacobi as the successor to Johann Fritze . When the dispute over Christ's descent into hell arose again and Johann Draconites and Johann Wigand supported the superintendent Aepinus, while Philipp Melanchthon , who was friends with Aepinus as well as Garcaeus, only advised peace, the council could not be held back and removed all opponents of Aepinus their offices.

In 1552 Garcaeus moved with his large family (6 sons and 2 daughters) to Greifswald , where he became professor of theology and the following year rector of the university . Economic reasons compelled him to leave Greifswald and take over the better-paid superintendent in Neubrandenburg as the successor to Erasmus Alber . Melanchthon held Garcaeus in high esteem and tried as much for him in Greifswald as in Rostock . The appointment to Rostock did not materialize in 1553. The activity in Neubrandenburg was also short-lived. He was often confused with his son of the same name, Johannes Garcaeus the Younger , who had been professor of theology in Greifswald and pastor at St. Jacobi since 1556.
