Thomas Mevius

Thomas Mevius (born December 21, 1524 in Stargard in Pomerania , † October 21, 1580 in Greifswald ) was a German legal scholar and university professor.

Life

Thomas Mevius attended education in Stettin and studied at the Brandenburg University of Frankfurt , the Leucorea and the Catholic University of Leuven . He then traveled through France and Italy, where he attended the University of Bologna for Doctor of Laws doctorate was.

In 1560 he became professor of law at the University of Greifswald and soon afterwards he was appointed to the royal council at the court of the Duke of Pommern-Wolgast . He was probably the first director of the Greifswald consistory founded in 1563 . In the years 1563/64 and 1578/79 he was rector of the Greifswald University.

family

Thomas Mevius was a son of the Mayor of Stargard Joachim Mevius (also Mevess) (1490-1565) and his wife Gertrud Appelmann (* 1490). Since 1561 he was married to Anna Falck (1543-1614), a daughter of the Szczecin Council Chancellor Johann Falck (1510-1571). His son Friedrich (1576–1636) and his grandson David Mevius (1609–1670) became law professors at the University of Greifswald.

His daughter Sibylla (1562–1630) married the Greifswald councilor and mayor Joachim Völschow (1550–1597). Their son Joachim Völschow (1591–1664) also became a law professor in Greifswald in 1623. Their daughter Sibylle Völschow (1584–1655) was married to the Greifswald professor Johann Trygophorus (1579 / 80–1626). His daughter Elisabeth (1568–1635) was married to the lawyer and Pomeranian Chancellor Daniel Runge (1561–1629).
