Christian Calenus , also Christian Kalen or Christian Kale (born October 11, 1529 in Fehmarn ; † March 24, 1617 in Greifswald ) was a German mathematician, physician, historian and poet.

Life

Calenus was enrolled at the University of Rostock in May 1547 and studied at the University of Greifswald from 1548 . After completing his studies, he took a position as a teacher at the Greifswald Church School St. Marien, was lecturer in grammar at Greifswald University in 1552 and professor of mathematics in the summer of 1553. In 1554 he went to the University of Wittenberg to study medicine. He later traveled to Italy and received his doctorate in 1560 in Pisa for doctor of medicine. In 1561 he again accepted a position at the University of Greifswald and became professor of medicine there.

In this function he wrote new statutes for the medical faculty, which are based on the statutes of the University of Rostock . In it he determined the books by Leonhart Fuchs , Jean François Fernel and Philipp Melanchthon's book De Anima as an introduction to medical studies . For further progressive studies he laid down the writings of Galenus and recommended the explanations of the plants of Pedanios Dioscorides for botanical hikes .

He has given disputations and speeches which, in addition to his medical education, also reveal literary activities. He was active as a historian in his book Bogislaws X. Pilgrimage to Jerusalem , published in Wittenberg in 1555, and also appeared as a poet in the university annals in 1564. With his verse form published there, he earned the praise of the "Decus et ornamentum studii" from posterity. During his 65 years of teaching at the University of Greifswald, he held the office of rector of the university six times.
