Johann Konrad Kern
Johann Konrad Kern (born June 11, 1808 in Berlingen TG ; † April 14, 1888 in Zurich ; also: Johannes Conrad Kern ) was a Swiss lawyer and national councilor from the canton of Thurgau . He later served as a Swiss diplomat in Vienna and Paris (there as "Minister", at that time it was equivalent to " Envoy ") and is considered the founder of Swiss professional diplomacy.
biography
Johann Konrad Kern studied theology in Basel from 1826 to 1830 as well as law in Basel, Berlin and Heidelberg. During his student days he joined the Swiss Zofingerverein . He began his political career as Thurgau's Grand Councilor from 1832 to 1853. He was President of the Grand Council nine times, and from 1832 to 1852 he was also a member of the Education Council. From 1837 to 1850 he was chief judge and president of the cantonal justice commission. The founding of the Thurgau Cantonal School in 1853 was due to him.
Core was u. a. Editor of the Federal Constitution of 1848, first President of the Federal Supreme Court , member of the National Council (1848–1854) and the Council of States (1855–1857), President of the National Council 1850/1851, President of the Swiss School Council , co-founder of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, and from 1857 to 1883 Swiss Envoy in Paris . As a diplomat he distinguished himself several times as a peacemaker.
Johann Konrad Kern died in Zurich in 1888 at the age of 79.
Appreciations and honors
The grave in front of the Berlinger Church is designed as a monument in the form of a column bearing the following inscription: ITS POWER BELONGED TO THE FATHERLAND - IT REST IN PEACE AFTER FAITHFUL WORK.
In 1891, three years after his death, Kernstrasse in Zurich was named after him.
On the 150th anniversary of the Thurtal -Bahnlinie one was in May 2005. ICN - tilting train of the SBB in the name of Minister core baptized.
The house where Kern was born in Berlingen (Seestrasse) has a memorial plaque at the entrance.
