Johann Daniel Preissler (also Preisler, Preißler; born January 17, 1666 in Nuremberg ; † October 13, 1737 in Nuremberg) was a prominent member of a family of painters who immigrated from Bohemia .

Life

Johann Daniel Preissler was a son of the painter Daniel Preissler and his wife Magdalena Riedner.

He painted portraits and histories, drew and frescoed. He became better known outside Nuremberg than through his artistic works, of which the nude drawings in particular were praised, through his series of art-theoretical publications with the main title "The Practic Invented By Theory". The individual booklets were translated into several languages ​​and served as instructions for many drawing students up until the 19th century (including Salomon Gessner in Switzerland).

First he is said to have learned in Nuremberg in the manner of his father, the portrait and history painter Daniel Preissler (1627–1665), then with Johann Murrer . A stay in Italy followed from 1688 to 1696. a. in Rome and Venice. In 1705 he became director of the Nuremberg Art Academy , which under him transformed into a municipal institution. In 1716 he founded the drawing school. This was also open to "poor people's children". It became a great success. With 71 students, it was so popular in the first year, which apparently prompted Preisler to work out didactic material. Before that he only had academic works a. a. published on anatomy, from 1721 z. To color in the "Practic invented by theory or Thoroughly written rules which can be used as a guide to famous artists drawing works". In doing so, Preisser also opened up academic areas that were rather secondary, such as flower drawing and ornamentation (after 1725) and landscape drawing (1739). Of course, he emphasized that these were only initial exercises.

The Preissler family publisher was continued by his sons Johann Justin (1698–1771), Georg Martin and Johann Daniel Preissler. His son Johann Martin Preissler (1715–1794) became a professor at the Academy in Copenhagen.

In 1737 Johann Daniel Preissler died in Nuremberg, who, along with Johann Kupetzky, was discussed by Johann Caspar Füssli as the most important painter of the early 18th century in Nuremberg.
