Life

Schieferdecker's father was a teacher at the Illustre Augusteum grammar school in Weißenfels and later a superintendent . He was the uncle of the only slightly younger organist and composer Johann Christian Schieferdecker .

From 1690 Johann David studied theology and oriental studies at the University of Leipzig . After receiving his master's degree in 1692, he gave lectures here, for which he also published an Arabic-Turkish grammar.

In 1698 he received his doctorate in theology from the University of Jena and was appointed professor at the Illustre Augusteum grammar school in Weißenfels as the successor to his father; here he worked until his death in 1721. At the same time he was pastor primarius at the Marienkirche, the town church of Weißenfels. In 1703 he published a commemorative publication to mark its anniversary, which contained the Weißenfels menu , which was later quoted again and again . It allegedly reproduced the menu of the feast for the inauguration on September 15, 1303 and was therefore long considered the oldest German menu, but was recognized in 2012 as a modern fake.

He was best known as a poet of cantatas and hymns. He wrote six years of cantatas for the Hofkirche in Neu-Augustusburg Palace and the Palace Chapel in Sangerhausen , the first of which appeared with a dedication to Duke Christian in 1713, the others from 1716 to 1720. Liebhold set many of his cantatas to music.

Some of his hymns remained in use into the 19th century, including Oh, dearest God! how wonderful ; Come, bless your people in time and with all our hearts we believe and want to hold onto it .
