Johann Evangelist Schifferl OSB (born March 3, 1704 in Oberehring as Georg Schifferl ; † December 26, 1771 in Oberalteich ) was a German Benedictine monastery and abbot in Oberalteich .

biography

Georg Schifferl was born as the son of a blacksmith in Ehring (Oberehring, today part of the municipality of Riekofen ). A benefactor made it possible for him to attend the Jesuit grammar school in Straubing . In December 1723 he entered the Benedictine monastery in Oberalteich near Straubing and received the religious name Johann Evangelist here when he was professed in 1724. He was then sent to the Prince-Bishop's Lyceum in Freising to study philosophy . This was followed by training in theology at the joint study of the Bavarian Benedictine Congregation , which at that time was housed by the Rott Monastery (am Inn). After completing his studies and returning to the Oberalteich Monastery, he was ordained a priest on December 19, 1728 and was then assigned to the pilgrimage church on the nearby Bogenberg , which belongs to the Oberalteich Monastery .

In 1731/32 he studied canon law at the University of Ingolstadt and obtained an academic doctorate. He then worked in Oberalteich as a theology teacher in the monastery 's house study and initially worked again at the pilgrimage church on the Bogenberg, then in the parishes of Pfelling and Aiterhofen, which the monastery looked after . From 1739 he took over the position of a theology teacher and at the same time the position of director of the joint study of the Bavarian Benedictine Congregation in Kloster Rott (am Inn). In 1756 he was appointed procurator of the congregation.

On February 20, 1758, the convent of Oberalteich elected Johann Evangelist Schifferl, who had previously held the office of economist and prior in the monastery, to succeed the deceased abbot Dominicus Perger . The confirmation of the election and the benediction of the new abbot took place on March 3, 1758 in Regensburg by the auxiliary bishop Franz Joachim Schmid von Altenstadt . Johann Evangelist Schifferl documented his activity as Abbot of Oberalteich in a detailed report, which covers the period up to 1769 in eighteen volumes ( Synopsis historica ). This report is a testimony to the high level of cultural life and scientific activity in the Oberalteich monastery. During this time, monks of the monastery were appointed as professors at the Benedictine University of Salzburg , the Lyceum in Freising and the joint studies of the Bavarian Benedictine Congregation, and solemn scientific disputations were held in the monastery itself, which were then published. In Oberalteich, under Johann EvangelistSchifferl, the monastery and church were adapted to the taste of the Rococo. The Straubing sculptor Mathias Obermayr equipped the prelature and other rooms with artistic stucco work on behalf of the abbot and delivered a magnificent new tabernacle for the high altar of the monastery church. Under Abbot Johann Evangelist Schifferl, Oberalteich was able to successfully consolidate its reputation and position as one of the leading Benedictine monasteries in Bavaria.
