Friedrich Matthäi (painter)
Johann Friedrich Matthäi (born March 3, 1777 in Meißen ; † October 23, 1845 in Vienna ) was a German portrait and history painter .
Life
Matthew was the son of the Meissen porcelain factory working architect , sculptor , painter and modeller Johann Gottlob Matthäi born. He learned at the Dresden Art Academy with Casanova , among others , and then studied with Füger at the Vienna Academy for five years .
After study trips and stays in Florence (1802-1804) and Rome (1805-1807) he became a teacher at the Dresden Academy after his return and in 1810 its director. In 1823 he was appointed inspector of the Dresden Gemäldegalerie and in 1834 its director. Matthäi was the last exponent of braid classicism. He died in Vienna on a return trip from Italy. In Dresden he was a member of the Masonic lodge Zum golden Apfel .
His students included the Nazarenes Carl Eggers and Philipp Veit .
