Johann Georg Brill

Johann Georg Brill (English John George Brill ; born 1817 near Kassel ; died 1888 in Philadelphia County ) was the founder of the J. G. Brill Company , one of the largest manufacturers of streetcars and trolleybuses in the USA .

The German emigrant Brill learned the carpentry trade in Bremen and emigrated to the USA after the death of his parents in 1847. At the age of thirty he arrived in Philadelphia with his wife and two children .

For twenty years he worked for the wagon construction company Murphy and Allison and in 1868 founded the company J. G. Brill & Son with his eldest son George Martin Brill for the construction of horse-drawn tram cars . It was known for the good quality of the car bodies and was soon exporting vehicles worldwide. From this, in 1887, the J. G. Brill Company developed into the largest tram manufacturer in the USA.

At the age of 71, Brill died of heart failure. On September 25, 1888 he was buried in Bala Cynwyd , Montgomery County .
