Johann Georg Etgens

Johann Georg Etgens (Czech Jan Jiří Etgens ; * 1693 in Brno ; † January 21, 1757 ibid) was a Moravian baroque painter and fresco artist .

Life

After an apprenticeship in his hometown Brno, Etgens went to Rome, where he continued his education in the studios of the artists Carlo Maratta and Sebastiano Conca . After his return in 1730 he worked as a painter and fresco artist in Bohemia , Moravia and Silesia . In 1732 he was busy painting the dome and the side walls of the Brno Minorite Church, after which he worked for the Cistercian monastery Velehrad and the monastery Hradisch . In 1738/39 he painted the hanging domes in the Raigern collegiate church . In 1739 he frescoed the central nave vault of the Jesuit church St. Nikolaus in Schweidnitz , and around 1750 he painted the vaulted refectory in the Jesuit college in Schweidnitz. He received special recognition for the wall paintings in the pilgrimage church in Kiritein . The frescoes in the Piarist Church in Kremsier were completed by Etgen's student J. Stern.

Etgens painted several altar leaves for the churches in Raigern , Iglau and Wrana .
