Johann Georg Waibel (born August 28, 1828 in Dornbirn ; † October 22, 1908 there ) was an Austrian politician, doctor and long-term mayor of the city of Dornbirn. Waibel was a member of the House of Representatives of the Austrian Reichsrat from 1878 to 1897 , from 1890 to 1908 a member of the Vorarlberg state parliament and from 1869 until his death mayor of his hometown.

Johann Georg Waibel was born on August 28, 1828, the son of innkeeper and community treasurer Andreas Waibel and his wife Maria Regina. After attending the public primary school in his hometown, he attended the private advanced training school of the teacher Franz Martin Kalb, which was also located there, then switched to the grammar school in Feldkirch and studied at the lyceum in Salzburg from 1846 to 1848 . He then moved to Munich , where he initially devoted himself to philosophical and scientific studies and finally studied medicine from 1849. After studying in Berlin and Vienna , he finally received his doctorate in human medicine on February 5, 1856 in the Austrian capital.

Professionally, he initially worked as a doctor at the General Hospital of the City of Vienna before opening his own practice in Höchst in 1859 . From 1861 he worked as a community doctor in Tschagguns . In 1863 he moved his practice back to his home town of Dornbirn, where he became a community and court doctor from 1866 to 1869. From 1869 until his death he acted as the mayor of Dornbirn. On October 19, 1908, as acting mayor, he suffered a stroke, from the consequences of which he died three days later on October 22.

In 1867 Johann Georg Waibel was elected for the first time for the Liberals in the Dornbirn community committee, while his party colleague Arnold Rüf became mayor. Two years later he himself successfully competed in the municipal elections for the Liberals and was elected Mayor of Dornbirn on February 19, 1869. He then held this office for more than 39 years until his death. During his tenure as mayor, among other things, the city ​​elevation of Dornbirn fell in 1901 and the opening of the Dornbirn – Lustenau electric railway a year later.

In addition to community politics, Johann Georg Waibel also represented the Liberal Party at the national level. In 1878, as a liberal representative of the cities, he became a member of the House of Representatives of the Imperial Council of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. As such, he succeeded the Vorarlberg MP Rudolf Ganahl and initially joined the German-Austrian club. He then moved to the United Left and was a member of the Liberal Progressive Party. His speeches in the Reichstag dealt mainly with economic issues as well as the transport and trade policy of Vorarlberg.

From 1890 until his death, Waibel was a member of the Vorarlberg Landtag as a member of the Vorarlberg Chamber of Commerce and Industry during its seventh, eighth and ninth legislative periods. From 1867 to 1869 he was also a member of the board of directors of the Association of Doctors in Vorarlberg and a member of numerous other associations, some of which he was also a founding member (Dornbirner Turnverein, Verein der Verfassungsfreunde in Vorarlberg). As mayor, he was also present as a delegate when the Vorarlberger Landesfeuerwehrverband was founded in 1875. He was then elected to the position of the first chairman of the association. He held this until 1891.

In 1884 Johann Georg Waibel was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Imperial Austrian Franz Joseph Order , and he was also awarded the Order of the Iron Crown III. Class (but without elevation to the nobility). On March 1, 1894, he was made an honorary citizen of Dornbirn, after his death in 1910 the city donated a memorial in front of the town hall. Today, part of Bödelestrasse in the Dornbirn municipal area - from its beginning at the old town hall to the confluence with Wingatstrasse - is referred to as Dr.-Waibel-Strasse in the local road network .
