Johann Gottfried Bremser
Johann Gottfried Bremser (born August 19, 1767 in Wertheim ; † August 21, 1827 in Vienna ) was a physician and parasitologist .
Live and act
He studied medicine in Jena and received his doctorate there in 1796. After traveling through Germany, Switzerland and Italy, he moved to Vienna and studied medicine there. After completing his studies, he joined the doctoral college in 1797 and from then on worked as a practicing doctor in Vienna. He volunteered as a brigade doctor for the Free Corps of the Viennese Citizenship, which, however, was no longer used until the armistice concluded on April 7, 1797 with the Napoleonic troops. In 1806 he began to work in the Hof-Naturalien-Cabinet (the forerunner of today's Natural History Museum Vienna ), where he became curator in 1811 . In 1815 he traveled to Paris to continue his research. In 1820 he became a member of theLeopoldina elected. In 1821 he was elected a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
At the instigation of Karl Franz Anton von Schreibers , he began building a collection of helminths in the Vienna Natural History Collection. In addition to his work on parasites, including one of the first papers on helminthology , Bremser published on scarlet fever , cowpox and measles . He strongly advocated the legal introduction of the cowpox vaccination.
