Johann Gottfried Geißler (born June 14, 1726 in Langenau in Upper Lusatia , † September 2, 1800 in Gotha ) was rector of the Princely School Pforta and ducal librarian in Gotha during the Enlightenment .

Born as the son of a pastor, Geißler studied at the University of Leipzig from 1744 after attending school in Görlitz , was then tutor in Leipzig and in 1751 vice rector there. From 1768 to 1779 he was the successor of Johann Heinrich Stuß at the Gothaer Gymnasium Illustre as rector. Here he made a great contribution to the reorganization of the grammar school by hiring specialist teachers, by abolishing corporal punishment and the cloak and by installing a school and poor library. In 1772, under his direction, the grammar school was transformed from a Latin school to a center of New Humanism and the Enlightenment . In the same year the duke appointed him a councilor.

From 1779 to 1786 he was the rector of the Princely School in Pforta. Duke Ernst II , with whom he was on friendly terms, appointed him in 1786 as the successor to the deceased director of the ducal library in Gotha at Schloss Friedenstein , where he sold valuable manuscripts and old prints partly through auctions, but also in free trade or privately acquired scientific research, albeit with financial support from the duke. Ernst knew Geißler from his earlier work at the Gotha grammar school. On the other hand, Geissler was well aware of the situation in Gotha despite seven years of activity in the school gate . Under Geissler's leadership, the personal relationships between the grammar school and library strengthened. Geißler held this office for 14 years until his death.

Geissler was a member of the Natural Research Society in Halle .

Johann Gottfried's son Johann Georg Geißler (1760–1830) was a ducal Saxon-Gotha government councilor and private secretary of Duke Ernst II in Gotha. His wife was the poet Henriette Wilhelmine Geißler , née Holderrieder (1772–1822), stepdaughter of the poet Benedigte Naubert .
