Life

Monument by Johann Heinrich Montanus in Bödefeld

The son of Johann Carl Montanus and Magdalena Köster was baptized on May 20, 1680 in Brunskappel . He studied philosophy and theology with the Jesuits in Fulda and then at the papal seminary there. He probably interrupted his studies temporarily because of his parents' plight. 1706 he received in Erfurt the priesthood .

He then worked in the Velmede parish , first as a chaplain in Gevelinghausen for two years and then as a vicar in Heringhausen for six months . On December 15, 1708, after graduating, he received a pastoral care permit for the Archdiocese of Cologne . The following year he became pastor in Grevenstein , where he worked for twelve years. Montanus took over the parish of Bödefeld on March 16, 1721. In the first year he began to prepare the construction of a new church. In addition to building the church, he also improved its equipment. In the years 1728/29 he had the Kreuzberg chapel built on the hill later known as Kreuzberg, in the construction of which he also participated. The Stations of the Cross and other Passion Grottoes followed in 1730/31. Subsequently, the place, where the population had previously begged God's help, became a place of pilgrimage .

Johann Heinrich Montanus was an admirer of the Passion and Cross of Christ. On July 28, 1718, he received permission from the Vicariate General in Cologne to go on a six-week pilgrimage to Dettelbach near Würzburg and Walldürn. During his lifetime, helpless and sick people from the surrounding dioceses came to the pastor to seek support and comfort from him. Montanus died in 1743 of a febrile illness. His mortal shell was first buried in the Bödefeld parish church. In 1910 the bones were buried in the cemetery because the church was being rebuilt. His final resting place has been in the Kreuzberg chapel since 1929. Montanus' successor was Johannes Mathias Selman, who had supported him in his work as vicar since 1728.

Works

Pastor Montanus wrote the flowers of prayer , a prayer and song book. The work was published posthumously. Some of the songs from it were taken over into the Catholic diocesan hymn book Sursum Corda .

Honors

The Montanus streets in Bödefeld, Heringhausen and Gevelinghausen, the former Montanus elementary school in Grevenstein, the listed Montanus chapel in Altenfeld and the Montanushaus in Bödefeld were named after him. In 2009, a three-ton statue of Pastor Montanus, created by master stonemason Ulrich Steinmetz, was inaugurated on the lawn in front of the parish church in Bödefeld. In addition, there were efforts to have Johann Heinrich Montanus beatified .
