Johann Hoffmann (often also Johannes Hoffmann ; born June 12, 1644 in Teichel , † June 1, 1718 in Frankenhausen ) was a German hymn poet and teacher .

Life

Hoffmann was the son of the mayor of Teichel. After attending the school in Rudolstadt , he went to Magdeburg . There he was taken in by a relative of his mother, the professor of theology and oriental languages ​​and pastor of the St. Jakobi Church Samuel Pomarius . With this he went to the academic college in Eperies in 1667 . There he became professor of theology and director of the college. In Eperies, however, there was persecution of Protestants . Therefore Hoffmann went to the University of Jena , where he received his master's degree .

Hoffmann taught as a private lecturer at the Jena University. In 1673 he was accepted by Ahasuerus Fritsch in his Jesus Society. In 1674 he received the crown of poets as an imperial count palatine . In 1676 he received the post of sub-director of the school in Rudolstadt and in 1681 he became the rector of the school in Frankenhausen. He stayed there until his death.

Hoffmann wrote several plays and 48 hymns. In addition, he published theological, philosophical, topographical and genealogical treatises.
