Johann Jakob Baier (medic, 1677)
Johann Jakob Baier (born June 14, 1677 in Jena , † July 14, 1735 in Altdorf near Nuremberg ) was a German physician and geologist.
Life
Baier was the son of the Protestant theologian Johann Wilhelm Baier . He studied medicine at the universities of Jena and Halle . After several trips, he returned to Jena in 1700, where he was promoted to a master's degree in philosophy and a doctorate in medicine. In 1701 he moved to Nuremberg to practice as a doctor. Then he became a city doctor in Regensburg .
At the age of 27 he was appointed professor of medicine at the University of Altdorf . In 1708 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina Scholars' Academy . When Baier was elected President of the Leopoldina as the successor to the late Lukas Schröck in 1730 , he brought the Society's library from Augsburg to Altdorf. As president, Baier chose Eugenianus I as the company name.
Because of this choice, Baier's attention was drawn and shortly thereafter he was appointed imperial personal physician. As a thank you for these services, Baier was ennobled to a count palatine after a few years.
After extensive preparatory work, Baier published a geology of the Nuremberg area and thus laid the foundation for geology in Franconia . This is how he described the Alfelder Windloch cave in Central Franconia in his work Oryctographia Norica . He greatly enhanced the Botanical Garden of the University of Altdorf when he incorporated it into the pharmaceutical industry.
The physician Ferdinand Jakob Baier was his son.
Johann Jakob Baier died on July 14, 1735 in Altdorf at the age of 58.
