Johann Jakob Scheidemantel (also Johann Jacob Scheidemantel ; * 1734 in Erfurt , Duchy of Saxony-Gotha ; † February 8, 1777 in Warsaw , Kingdom of Poland ) was the first Lutheran pastor in Zaleszczyki and Warsaw.

Life

He was the son of the doctor Volkmar Gottfried Scheidemantel and his wife Maria Sibylla, nee Stengel. His brother Heinrich Gottfried Scheidemantel later became a professor in Jena and Stuttgart .

Johann Jakob Scheidemantel studied Protestant theology in Breslau and obtained a master's degree. In 1760 he was first tutor in Wieliczka and was ordained in Breslau on October 9th. Then he became the first pastor of a German parish of the Church of St. Philippi in the Principality of Moldova . The parishioners were German craftsmen who worked in a factory in Zaleszczyki , Galicia . Since they were not allowed to build their own church in Poland, they founded one on the other side of the Dniester river with the permission of the local prince.

Scheidemantel was in his hometown of Erfurt around 1761/62 and then traveled with K. Chr. From Marschall to Hamburg , later to Holland and to the English court of King George III. At the end of 1763 he was back in Prilipcze. In 1764 he visited the Prince of Moldova in Iasi.

On May 15, 1766 he was still in Prilipcze, but was already in Warsaw on June 27 at the court of the Danish ambassador Armand de Mestral de Saint-Saphorin. He became a Danish legation preacher and held the first Protestant service on June 21, 1767. Since the Lutherans in Warsaw did not have their own church approved, he looked after them too. Since 1770 he has received 200 thalers from them annually as payment.

In 1775 he was officially appointed the first Lutheran pastor of the parish in Warsaw. He died in 1777 and was buried in the cemetery of the Holy Cross Church in Leszno .

Johann Jakob Scheidemantel was not married and lived with his widowed mother for the last few years.
