Johann Jakob Simmler , also Johann Jakob Simler (born August 12, 1716 in Zurich ; † August 5, 1788 , different date August 8, 1788 there) was a Swiss Protestant clergyman and church historian .

Life

Johann Jakob Simmler was a fifth generation descendant of Josias Simler and the son of pen scribe Hans Rudolf Simmler (1681–1725) and his wife Susanna (1681–1734), a daughter of Stadtseckelmeister Hans Jakob Heidegger (1630–1698).

After completing his theology studies, he was accepted into the Ministry of Spiritual Affairs in Zurich in 1738 and in 1739 began teaching at the municipal school for scholars, where he received a formal teaching position in 1742. From 1748 to 1785 he held the post of inspector of the Alumnate of the Collegium Carolinum at the Fraumünster and in 1752 became dean of the younger church servants until he retired in 1785.

Johann Jakob Simmler was married to Anna Elisabeth (* 1721), daughter of the shopkeeper David Zimmermann (1683–1748); together they had seven children.

21.5 linear meters of his estate are now in the Zurich Central Library , which were recorded on 101 rolls of microfilm between 1963 and 1965 and are kept in the Foundation for Reformation Research Collections in St. Louis , Missouri .

Church historical work

Johann Jakob Simmler had an extensive collection of church history documents that he had created in copies. His library, the 1,300 volumes and the collection of his documents, the manuscripts of which included the document collection of 196 folio volumes with 62 volumes in a double register, as well as the other mixed manuscripts, which comprised around 200 volumes, were donated to the Zurich City Library by his descendants after his death . The work Epistulae Tigurinae de Rebus Potissimum Ad Ecclesiae Anglicanae reformationem perpinentibus conscripae , which was published in 1848 by the Parker Society in England , is based on his collected documents and books .

Writing

Johann Jakob Simmler wrote articles for Gottlieb Emanuel von Haller's Library of Swiss History , planned an edition of the letters on the Reformation of the English Church and published his collection of documents on Swiss church history from 1757 to 1763. His works included theological and church-historical treatises, translations of French sermons, a translation by Cornelius Nepos in 1742 and his collection of old and new documents illuminating the history of the church, primarily in Switzerland .
