Johann Belz
Johann Josef Belz (born March 18, 1873 in Schwanheim am Main ; † January 7, 1957 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German sculptor and medalist .
Life
Belz first studied woodcut techniques with Karl Ludwig Sand, who came to Frankfurt as a teacher in 1886, at the Frankfurt School of Applied Arts. After three years he switched to the academy in Munich, where he studied naturalistic sculpture. This was followed by a two-year course of study in Berlin with August Vogel . In 1903 he had his first small exhibition at the Frankfurter Kunstverein. His studio was near the Städel , where he had a job. He designed numerous religious motifs (Madonna, Josef, Pièta, Stations of the Cross etc.), also in the church of St. Laurentius in Leider . His son Willi Belz, born in 1906 and also a sculptor, died in the war in 1945. After the Second World War , Edwin Hüller was one of his students from 1946 . Together they restored many damaged sculptures and fountains. The protective mantle Madonna with the Holy Helper's altar in the Mauritius Church in Schwanheim, which he created with Hüller in 1948, is considered to be the artist's late work .
