Johann Konrad von Reinach-Hirtzbach (born August 28, 1657 in Michelbach , Alsace, † March 19, 1737 in Pruntrut ) was Prince-Bishop of Basel from 1705 to 1737 .

origin

Johann Konrad was born as the son of Hans Diebold Freiherr von Reinach -Hirtzbach († 1702) and Anna Maria Eva von Freiin von Reinach-Steinbrunn († 1702). The father was in the service of the Prince-Bishop and was most recently Vogt of Elsgau .

education

Johann Konrad studied first at the Jesuit high school in Pruntrut and from 1673–1678 philosophy and theology at the Collegium Germanicum in Rome.

Career

As early as 1681 he became capitular and in 1692 he was ordained a priest . 1704–1705 he assumed the function of dean of the Basel cathedral chapter and in 1705 he was elected bishop by the cathedral chapter.

Delémont Castle

After Johann Konrad was injured in a riding accident in 1724 and remained disabled, his brother Johann Baptist von Reinach-Hirtzbach (1669–1734) became coadjutor of the prince-bishop with succession right - however, he died before his brother.

The Prince

Johann Konrad is considered to be the first absolutist ruler of the bishopric. He began a centralized reform of the public administration, which ultimately failed due to popular resistance, but nevertheless created the basis for a more modern administration. He was also active in the fields of the state economy, transport and coinage. In 1716 he began building Delémont Castle as a second residence and re-established the seminary in Pruntrut.

However, his entire reign was overshadowed by the disputes with the population in the southern Jura over their political participation rights, which he won through a decision of the imperial court in 1736, but could not really resolve.
