Wilhelm Jakob Rinck von Baldenstein (born January 10, 1624 at Birseck Castle ; † June 4, 1705 in Pruntrut ) was Prince-Bishop of the Duchy of Basel from 1693 to 1705 .

Life

Wilhelm Jakob comes from the Basel branch of the Graubünden noble family of the Rinck von Baldenstein . He was a son of Johann Jakob Rinck von Baldenstein, who was the prince-bishop's chief bailiff of the Birseck office and a nephew of the Basel bishop Wilhelm Rinck von Baldenstein .

He received his education and training at the Jesuit colleges of Pruntrut, Freiburg im Üechtland and Lucerne . In 1642/43 he studied theology and law in Freiburg im Breisgau , where he was also rector of the university in 1647/48.

As early as 1640 he had become canon of the Basel cathedral chapter , which entrusted him with further offices. So he was 1648–1693 capitular , 1651–1660 custodian and 1648–1693 dean of the cathedral chapter. He was ordained priest in 1651.

On August 3, 1688, he was elected coadjutor of the Prince-Bishop and on September 27, 1690, Pope Alexander VIII confirmed him with the appointment of Titular Bishop of Curium . On July 13, 1693, Pope Innocent XII. the official appointment as Prince-Bishop of Basel.

He wanted to bind the prince-bishopric more closely to the Swiss Confederation and in 1695 renewed an alliance with the Catholic cantons. In 1702 and 1703 he even tried to gain admission to the Swiss Confederation, although he was the German imperial prince .
