Johann Mantel II. (* Around 1495 in Cottbus ; † around 1542 there) was a German Lutheran theologian of the Reformation period.

Life

Native of Cottbus he came from the monastery on Oybin eleven monks in 1516 in the by Duke George the Bearded founded Cölestinerkloster on the Koenigstein fortress and later became Prior. From there he fled in 1523 on the premise in religious matters a trip to take to Wittenberg , where he became a deacon. Martin Luther wanted to bring him to Prussia in May 1524 . However, he married on January 8, 1525 in Wittenberg and became lecturer of the town church . On August 8, Luther sent him to Mühlhausen , where he worked for a while.

He returned to Wittenberg to begin studying and was enrolled there on April 17, 1528. In 1527, the year of the plague in Wittenberg, Mantel's family moved into the sheltered house of Justus Jonas , who had sought refuge with Michael Meyenburg in Nordhausen . But the plague didn't stop at Mantel's family either. At the beginning of May 1528, when Johannes Bugenhagen's eldest son Michael died, Mantel's son died on the same day.

In 1530 he accompanied Philipp Melanchthon to Görlitz to negotiate the marriage of the pastor there. In 1537 he was archdeacon of the main church in his hometown Cottbus. In October 1539 he fell seriously ill and Luther wrote him a letter of comfort. From the end of March 1541 to May he was in Brandenburg where the council wanted to accept him as a preacher. His daughter's wedding was in July or August, for which the elector gave him ten guilders . In April and May 1542 he was seriously ill again and died. In 1543 Luther asked the elector for support for his widow. She was still alive on July 3, 1545.
