Life

Schön was the son of the businessman Samuel Sigismund Franz Schön (1772-1819) and his wife Elise (1772-1819), daughter of the botanist Matthias Jacob Schleiden . One brother was the shipowner August Joseph Schön .

Johann Matthias Albrecht Schön attended the Johanneum in Hamburg from September 1814 to 1819 . He then began his medical studies in Halle (Saale) and completed it in Berlin in 1823 . He received his doctorate on April 30, 1823 in Halle. He then returned to his hometown, where he worked as an assistant doctor at the St. Georg General Hospital until 1827 , then from 1827 to 1830 as a doctor at the Hamburg citizen's military and from 1830 to the end of 1869, after he became increasingly ill, in addition to his own practice also at and hospital was active. In addition to specialist medical literature (mainly in the field of ophthalmology and eye anatomy), he also wrote medical-historical articles in specialist journals. He also wrote works from the field of beautiful literature and several reviews. On March 7th, 1870, the severely ill Schön moved to Stuttgart .

Schön was a member of the Society of German Natural Scientists and Doctors . He was also a member of the board of directors of the Hamburger Liedertafel under Albert Methfessel and later under Schäfer, and a member of the Hamburg Gymnastics Association from 1816 since it was founded. At the time of his death, he was believed to be the last remaining member from the founding time. At the evening celebration of the 60th anniversary of the foundation on September 2, 1876, at least one other living member was found, Friedrich Validzow, who was already doing gymnastics in the previous gym of co-founder Gotthard Nicolai before it was founded.

Schön was married twice; first marriage since 1832 with Augusta Sophia Heyliger (1810–1847) from Saint Croix , daughter of Nicolas (Salomon) Heyliger and Anna Maria Charlotte, née Benners, and later in her second marriage from 1852 to Juliane Christiana Marie Lüders, born on Gut Seekamp as the daughter of Caspar Friedrich Lüders and Catharina Elisabeth, née Wriedt, whom he left as a widow when he died in Hamburg. He was buried on April 10, 1870 in the Katharinen cemetery in Hamburg.

In 1907, son Theodor Schön handed over his father's literary estate (2337 sheets, partly printed) to the Royal State Library in Stuttgart, from which the Württemberg State Library emerged .
