Johann Michael Weiß , also Johann Michael Weisse (* December 12, 1648 in Ortrand ; † February 28, 1726 in Hohnstein (Saxon Switzerland) ) was a German Lutheran theologian .

Life

Johann Michael Weiß was born in Ortrand am Schraden in 1648 as the son of theologian Kaspar Weiß . He studied in Meissen , Wittenberg and Leipzig theology . He completed his studies in Leipzig in 1676 with a master's degree. A few years later he was pastor from 1680 in Steinigtwolmsdorf and in Meißen, from 1693 in Hohnstein in Saxon Switzerland .

Johann Michael Weiß is considered to be the author of a historical chronicle of the former Hohnstein office , published in 1729 , in which he describes the place and its surroundings.

family

  • Father: Kaspar Weis (1620–1669), Protestant theologian. He was a son of the Meissen ship owner Valentin Weise and worked as a pastor in Ortrand, later in Seusslitz and Merschwitz .
  • Brother: Christian Weise (1655–1727), Protestant pastor. He was also born in Ortrand and later worked in Limbach near Oschatz and in Ziegra-Knobelsdorf-Schweta .
  • Son: Christian Heinrich Weisse (1688–1730), philologist and educator. He was born in Steinigtwolmsdorf and became a student in Leipzig in 1706. He completed his studies in 1709 with a master's degree. In 1715 he became vice rector of the Latin School in Chemnitz , 1725 rector in Annaberg and finally director of the grammar school in Altenburg in 1726 .
  • Grandson: Christian Felix Weisse (1726–1804), poet , writer and educator. The son of CH Weisse was a friend of Lessing . Weisse is one of the most important representatives of the Enlightenment and is considered the founder of German children's and youth literature .
