Johann Nepomuk Muxel (born April 20, 1790 in Munich , † May 17, 1870 in Landshut ) was a German lithographer and etcher.

Life

Johann Nepomuk Muxel was initially trained by his father, the sculptor Franz Joseph Muxel ; his brother Joseph Anton Muxel also became a painter. In 1805 he took lessons from Johann Christian von Mannlich , later he learned at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich (1809 instructed by Johann Peter von Langer ). Muxel was friends with the painter Ludwig Emil Grimm , who stayed in Munich from 1810 to 1814 with interruptions and temporarily lived with the Franz Joseph Muxel family. Muxel was probably known through Grimm to the writer Clemens Brentano and his sister Bettina von Arnim .

Muxel gave drawing lessons in aristocratic families and in 1815 became a drawing teacher in the family of Eugène de Beauharnais , Duke of Leuchtenberg . Around this time, Muxel created etchings by actors, also as illustrations in the Munich theater journal (1814–1816). From 1824 Muxel was inspector of the ducal Leuchtenbergische Gemäldegalerie, whose pictures he published in outlines mostly etched and engraved by himself.

Muxel lived at Weinstraße 16 in Munich in 1834 (next to today's town hall), and later moved to Landshut (old town 87).

memory

Muxelstraße in Solln (Munich) is named after Johann Nepomuk Muxel.
