Johann Nepomuk von Apfaltern (* 1743 in Ljubljana ; † February 3, 1817 ) was a military person in the service of the Habsburg monarchy .

Life

Johann Nepomuk of Apfaltern came the moment of Emperor Leopold I in the baron collected family Apfaltern . At the age of 15 he entered the military, ten years later he was promoted to captain in the 8th border regiment . So he took part in the Russian-Austrian Turkish War.

Since 1789, functioned from Apfaltern as Major , starting in 1795 as a colonel lieutenant and then came to the army in Italy. There he attacked the entrenchments of Madonna del monte in the Republic of Genoa , for which he was famous. He also excelled in the battle of Giessen , so that Feldzeugmeister Paul Kray von Krajowa praised him.

In 1797, von Apfaltern was promoted to colonel in the regiment. On March 27, 1799 he fought at Legnago , on March 30, the Battle of Verona and on April 5, the Battle of Magnon . On April 20th he was able to conquer Brescia with the three battalions belonging to the regiment , fought on April 27th and 28th in the Battle of Cassano and on June 17th near Trebbia . He was particularly praised there for leading the regiment well.

In these battles he was wounded by apples, which is why he was made an honorary major general in 1800 and retired . Most of the remaining 17 years of his life were spent with his family in Ljubljana .
