Johann Peter Schmidt

Johann Peter Schmidt (born April 20, 1708 in Rostock ; † November 6, 1790 in Schwerin ) was a German lawyer, university professor, rector of the University of Rostock and minister.

Life

Johann Peter Schmidt was a son of Jonas Schmidt, brewer and senator in Rostock. He attended the large city school (Rostock) . From October 1722 he first studied Protestant theology in Rostock, but soon switched to studying law . From 1726 to 1728 he traveled to Königsberg , Danzig , Kloster Oliva and Greifswald to study , followed by studies at the Universities of Halle, Wittenberg and Leipzig, where he later became the Saxon court advisor and master of ceremonies Johann Julius Vieth von Golßenau (1713–1784) as court master accompanied.

1733 he returned to Rostock, made in winter 1733/34 his law degree and was here on September 22, 1735 chaired by Ernst Johann Friedrich Mantzel to Dr. jur. PhD.

In the following year, 1736, he was appointed as a full council professor of the codes. In 1738/39 he was procurator of the law faculty and dean in the academic years 1738/39, 1740/41, 1741, 1742 and 1743. In 1737/38, 1743/44 and 1746/47 he was rector of the university.

In 1750 he went to Schwerin as a secret chancellery to the government of the Duchy of Mecklenburg- Schwerin. In 1752 he became a real government and feudal councilor. He was significantly involved in the drafting of the Land Constitutional Constitution of 1755. In 1763 he became a secret councilor and minister.

In over 40 years of service he advised three dukes: Christian Ludwig , Friedrich and Friedrich Franz I.

Schmidt library

Johann Peter Schmidt had amassed a remarkable collection of legal writings, Mecklenburgica and carnival customs. To this end, he created a Corpus Constitutionum Meclenburgicarum with around 1,300 princely patents from 1508 to 1760.

Bound in 150 uniform anthologies of various formats with 6,000 prints and manuscripts, this Schmidt library came to the Grand Ducal Government Library in Schwerin in 1834, today the State Library of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .
