Johann Peter Willebrand
Johann Peter Willebrand , also Willebrandt (born September 10, 1719 in Rostock , † July 22, 1786 in Hamburg ) was a German lawyer and judge who was also known as a travel writer during his lifetime.
Life
Willebrand came from a Mecklenburg merchant family based in Rostock. He studied law at the University of Halle and was awarded a Dr. jur. PhD. After extensive travels through Europe, he became a lawyer in Lübeck and married there.
In Lübeck he began to deal with the history of the Hanseatic League and can therefore be regarded as one of the very early Hanseatic historians. Because of his sought relationship with the Danish Minister of State Johann Hartwig Ernst von Bernstorff , he was appointed by the Danish King to the judiciary and member of the Pinneberg and Altona Higher Appeal Courts and the Upper Consistory in Glückstadt . This obliged him to take up residence in Altona . As police director of Altona (1757–1767), he asked to leave because of friction with the city council and citizens.
He was now a full-time writer in neighboring Hamburg. In 1775/76 his main work, Grundriß einer Schöne Stadt , appeared, in which he developed the principles of a functional city layout and city administration. He was criticized by later critics for his rambling and lengthy baroque style.
According to contemporary sources, the representative of the Hanseatic cities in Saint Petersburg Johann Nicolaus Willebrandt is said to have been his son.
