Johann Riedel S.J. (also Johannes Riedel ; born April 22, 1654 in Wildgrub near Freudenthal ; † January 2, 1736 in Schweidnitz ) was a German sculptor and religious member of the Jesuits .

Life

During a study visit to Paris, Johann Riedel decided to join the Jesuit order. That is why he asked for admission to the Bohemian Jesuit Province and soon returned to his homeland. On November 12, 1682 he began the novitiate with the Brno Jesuits . For educational purposes he made trips to Kuttenberg and Prague, Switzerland and Alsace. On February 20, 1693, he took the religious vows . As early as 1692 he had been running a wood carving and joinery workshop in Schweidnitz, in which both religious and secular journeymen worked.

His most famous works include sculptures for the parish church of hll. Stanislaus and Wenzel in Schweidnitz, which was handed over to the Jesuits in 1660. They caused a renovation in the Baroque style. Johann Riedel created numerous sculptures for the interior, including

  • the main altar with canopy on seven columns and the sculptures of hll. Florian, Franz-Xaver, Wenzel, Stanislaus, Ignatius von Loyola and Georg. About it St. Our Lady as Queen of the World, God the Father and Holy Spirit (1694)

He created other works for the former Jesuit monastery in Deutsch Wartenberg . He worked in his Schweidnitz workshop for almost 40 years.
