Spiritual and literary work
Johann Rudolf Ulrich advocated moderate rationalism and quite consciously advocated an enlightenment of the school reform of 1775.
In 1770, at the autumn synod, he warned pastors against excessive emphasis on original sin in their sermons, which could lead to demoralization of the population and would be detrimental to church attendance.
In 1822 he tried to prevent his colleague Johann Jakob Tschudi (1722–1824) from opening a witch trial against Anna Göldi , but could not prevent it, so that Anna Göldi was executed on June 13, 1782; in the judgment, however, the terms " witch " and " witchcraft " were avoided.
In addition to his various sermons, including sermons for the promotion of active Christianity , he published The New Testament with the summaries by Jean-Frédéric Ostervald in 1766 .
