Johann Tristan of France (French: Jean Tristan de France ), called Johann von Damiette (born April 8, 1250 in Damiette , Egypt , †  August 3, 1270 outside Tunis ) was a French prince from the Capetian dynasty . He was Count of Nevers , Auxerre and Tonnerre (de iure uxoris ) from 1265 to 1270 and Count of Valois and Crépy from 1268 to 1270 .

Johann was the fourth son of the French King Louis IX. the Saint and Margaret of Provence ; he was also the first of three children of the royal couple who were born during the Sixth Crusade . His birthplace was the Egyptian port city of Damiette, which had been conquered by the Crusaders in 1249. According to the chronicler Jean de Joinville , an old knight acted as midwife at the birth. Two days before the queen's birth, the king was captured by the Mameluks , which is why Johann got his second name Tristan on this sad occasion . He was baptized in the great mosque of Damiette, which had been consecrated into a church. Damiette had to be evacuated a month later. Johann spent the first years of his life in the Holy Land until 1254 , where his siblings Peter (1251) and Blanche (1253) were born.

According to his father's wish, Johann should join the Dominican Order, which he successfully opposed. In 1265 he was married to Jolanthe of Burgundy († 1280), a daughter of Odo of Burgundy , who brought the counties of Nevers, Auxerre and Tonnerre into the marriage. In 1268 Johann was appointed Count of Valois and Crépy by his father in his own right, which he held as a paragium .

Two years later, in 1270, Johann accompanied his father on the Seventh Crusade , which reached Tunis from Cagliari in July . There a bacterial disturbance immediately spread in the army, which Johann succumbed to on August 3rd. A good three weeks later, on August 25th, King Ludwig IX also died. the plague. Both were transferred to France and buried in the Saint-Denis basilica .

Johann's marriage remained childless, his appanage reverted to the crown. Jolanthe married Count Robert III in 1272 . of Flanders († 1322).
