Johann von Spreckelsen (* around 1460 in Hamburg ; † February 25, 1517 there ) was a Hamburg councilor and mayor .

Live and act

Spreckelsen was elected councilor in 1498 and mayor on February 28, 1512, as the successor to the late mayor Carsten Barschampe († 1511).

On May 12, 1505, he founded the so-called Pfingsthöge . This family festival was celebrated every year at Pentecost "to maintain good friendship and unity" . The menu for meals was laid down. For example, venison was not allowed to be eaten at this festival . If someone made changes to the regulations, they had to pay for a keg of beer. Those who were late for the fixed meals had to pay a fine, the money with which wine was bought. The Pentecost was initially held at his own expense. But as more and more family members participated, it was decided that everyone should contribute to the expenses. In 1574 a foundation was set up into which everyone paid a contribution and the interest of which was used to finance the family festival. In 1625, the Pentecost was celebrated for the last time and then canceled because of too many participants. By 1688, the capital of this foundation had increased to over 50,000 Mark Banco , so that on July 3, 1688, the family members met under the chairmanship of a councilor and negotiated the determination of the funds. 24,000 Mark Banco were handed over to the finance department for the construction of an armory , which was later built on the Ellerntorsbrücke , 10,000 Mark Banco were invested and the interest was paid to the main pastor to Sankt Jacobi and professor at the Academic Gymnasium Johann Friedrich Mayer , as long as he held lectures at the Gymnasium, paid off. After Mayer left Hamburg again, half of this invested capital was used for the orphanage and half of the penitentiary . Another 7,090 Mark Banco were immediately awarded to the orphanage and penitentiary. 4,253 Mark Banco were paid out to needy family members and 860 Mark Banco were invested in converting the Jews in Hamburg. On November 21, 1688, this distribution of funds was established by a decree of the council. The main pastor at Sankt Katharinen and two other citizens should take over the administration of this foundation.

On May 17, 1986, the Pfingsthöge was brought back to life by the namesake of Spreckelsen and has been held annually at Pentecost ever since.
