After studying in Freiburg im Breisgau and Munich with a doctorate in 1962, Johannes Dichgans became senior consultant for neurology in Freiburg in 1969 . His habilitation in 1970 was followed by a stay abroad at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he conducted research at the Institute of Psychology from 1971 to 1972. From 1978 to 2005 he was Medical Director of the Neurological Clinic at the University of Tübingen . Extensive research and publication activities with over 65 publications in the years 2000 to 2007 alone extended to many areas of neurology. Dichgans focuses on brain tumors and functions of the right hemisphere. In 2000 Dichgans received the Robert Pfleger Research Prize for his fundamental contributions to experimental and clinical neurology, especially for his work on motor control and on the pathophysiology of the cerebellum.

His scientific commitment was decisive for the establishment of the Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research (HIH), financed by the Hertie Foundation with almost 22 million euros, of which he became the first director. His successor as head of the neurological department at the University Clinic in Tübingen was Michael Weller in 2005 , who also became his successor at the Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research, of which Dichgans is still a member of the board of trustees.
