Johannes Ernst , also Johann Ernst (born September 23, 1683 in Suhr , † September 12, 1765 in Aarau ) was a Swiss Protestant clergyman.

Life

Johannes Ernst was the son of his father of the same name, Johannes Ernst (born March 3, 1644 in Kirchberg near Küttigen ; † unknown), pastor in Suhr, and his wife Elisabeth Wassmer. He had nine siblings. Presumably he received his theological training at the Bern Academy ; He was ordained in 1708 .

From 1710 he was vicar to his father, who had been active in Birrwil since 1688 , and was his successor from 1718 to 1731. In the period from 1731 until his death he was the second pastor in Aarau.

In 1740, through the Aarau theology student Daniel Schmuziger, he came into closer contact with the Moravian Brethren , a Lutheran - Pietist denomination. This led to the fact that he was persecuted in Aarau and reported to the Bern Council . Even so, he stood by the brothers and gave two of his sons to the church. In 1748 he visited the congregation in Herrnhaag , which had been founded ten years earlier by the Count of Zinzendorf , who found refuge here with the Moravian Brethren. He left the management of the Aarau partnership to the German brothers. He did not preach in the Church in the Lord's Hat, but in the Reformed Spirit.

In 1751, Petrus Domenicus Rosius à Porta stayed with him. In 1757 he received a visit from the Count of Zinzendorf and was in contact with Daniel Willi by letter.

Johannes Ernst had been married to Salome in Leutwil since June 16, 1713 , daughter of councilor Jacob Rohr (1654–1728) from Lenzburg . They had thirteen children who included:

  • Johannes Ernst (born June 28, 1714 in Birrwil; † unknown), provisional in Aarau, pastor in Kirchberg, Affoltern and dean in Aarau, married several times;
  • Samuel Ernst (born September 19, 1717 in Birrwil; † July 25, 1793), doctor, notary, land clerk in Biberstein , town clerk and mayor in Aarau, married several times;
