Johannes Hömberg

Johannes Hömberg (* 1931 in Bochum ) is a German musician , conductor and choir director .

Professional and teaching activity

Johannes Hömberg studied school music, composition, conducting, musicology and German literature in Freiburg and Munich . From 1959 to 1964 he was chief conductor of the symphony orchestra in Salvador / Bahia (Brazil) and lecturer for conducting and composition at the University of Bahia.

After returning to Germany, he moved to the Goethe-Institut in Munich, where he headed the music department from 1965 to 1969 and was responsible for the international work of representatives of German musical culture.

In 1969 Johannes Hömberg was appointed professor for choral conducting and composing at the Cologne University of Music . Here he directed the university choir, the main subject class for choral conducting and the vocal ensemble Pro Musica Köln, which he founded, and trained school musicians in choral and orchestral conducting. The soloists of his oratorios and passion performances include u. a. Helen Kwon , Anja Harteros , Mechthild Georg, Karl Markus , Franz Müller-Heuser , Andreas Schmidt and Wilhelm Hartmann.

Honourings and prices

With Pro Musica Köln , Hömberg achieved international recognition in Europe (including 1st Prize International Choir Festival, Cork / Ireland) with performances in Italy, Switzerland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Russia and successes overseas, especially in Latin America (1972, 1978, 1985).

In Germany, Hömberg recorded numerous works from six centuries for radio and record , including complete presentations of the mass in Gregorian chant up to Stravinsky, the cantatas from Heinrich Schütz to Max Reger , almost all operas by Kurt Weill and a number of special programs:

Pro Musica Köln was transformed into a vocal soloist ensemble with a regular cast of six singers each.
