Johannes Knittel

Johannes Knittel (born August 11, 1910 in Woltrop ; † January 3, 1989 ) was a German director, actor and screenwriter .

Life

During his studies in theater studies , Romance studies and philology in Münster, Hamburg and Paris, Knittel already worked in communist student theaters. Because of his anti-fascist activities he was arrested and taken to prison in Hamm (Westphalia) . After his release he emigrated to France. There he was a fighter in the Maquis . After the end of the Second World War he was first councilor of the KPD in Hamm when he came to Deutsche Theater in East Berlin in 1946 , where he worked as a dramaturge and assistant director.

From 1949 Knittel worked for Phoenix-Film, later for DEFA , where he was mainly employed in dubbing. Between 1955 and 1961 he directed a total of four DEFA feature films, including 1959 Musterknaben with Rolf Herricht . In addition to his work as a director and screenwriter, he also worked occasionally as an actor in feature films, such as in Where you go from 1957 or in the fairy tale film Der Eisenhans from 1988.

In 1969 he was awarded the GDR Art Prize.
