Johannes Kornhuber (born September 11, 1959 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German psychiatrist and psychotherapist . He is professor of psychiatry and psychotherapy at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and director of the Psychiatric and Psychotherapeutic Clinic at the University Hospital Erlangen .

Life

Johannes Kornhuber studied medicine at the University of Ulm . He was awarded a Dr. med. doctorate and later worked as a scholarship holder of the German Research Foundation at the Psychiatric University Clinic in Würzburg . He qualified as a professor at the University of Würzburg in 1992 in psychiatry and psychotherapy. From 1996 he headed the gerontopsychiatry department at the Psychiatric University Clinic in Göttingen as a major professor ; from 1998 he was also senior physician and deputy director of the clinic. Since 2000 he has been professor for psychiatry and psychotherapy and director of the psychiatric and psychotherapeutic university clinic at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg .

Johannes Kornhuber is married and has two children. He is the son of the neurologist Hans Helmut Kornhuber .

Kornhuber contributed to the understanding of the biological basis of depression , schizophrenia , addictions and dementia disorders and discovered new mechanisms of action of psychotropic drugs.

The description of the mechanism of action of memantine provided an important basis for its worldwide approval as an antidementia drug . When he continued to work with memantine and other psychotropic drugs , Kornhuber found a high concentration of the substances in human brain tissue, among other things. a. due to uptake in acidic intracellular areas. The high accumulation in the brain tissue allows a better understanding of both the delayed onset of action of antidepressants and neuroleptics as well as the prolonged effects after their discontinuation. These considerations suggested new sites of action for psychotropic drugs within the acidic intracellular areas. One of these sites of action is the intra-lysosomal ceramide- forming enzyme acid sphingomyelinase . Antidepressants inhibit this enzyme and develop their effect through it. The effect of neuroleptics can also be partly explained by their accumulation in acidic synaptic vesicles . In the field of addictions, Kornhuber is investigating the formative effects of prenatal testosterone on the developing brain. He participated in the development of the glutamate hypothesis of schizophrenia .

Kornhuber is involved in national collaborative research projects, including a. involved in the dementia competence network, the research network for mental illnesses, a research network for the prevention of addictions and in the development of the current guidelines on dementia. In clinical care, he advocates multimodal treatment.
