The Ulanendenkmal in Rhöndorf , a district of Bad Honnef in the North Rhine-Westphalian Rhein-Sieg district , is a monument to the the First World War fallen of the Lancers "Grand Duke Friedrich von Baden" (Rhenish) No. 7, . It is a listed building as a monument .

location

The Ulanendenkmal is located on the Rhöndorfer southern slope of the Drachenfels at the upper end of the vineyard of the same name at an altitude of almost 115  m above sea level. NHN . It stands on a terraced hilltop, which is equipped with stepped paths and stone-transparent retaining walls.

history

A memorial in honor of the soldiers of the regiment who died in the First World War was initially to be erected in its garrison town of Saarbrücken , which was ruled out due to the status of the Saar area at that time and its connection to France. In the course of efforts to find an alternative location, the mother of one of the regiments' cavalry masters, Ludwig Lantz, who came from Rhöndorf, prepared a plot of land for the construction of the monument.

The monument in Rhöndorf was created based on a free draft by the Düsseldorf architect Emil Fahrenkamp . The construction work was carried out by a local builder. The construction costs were met from donations. Construction began before 1923; the inauguration took place on September 27, 1925 in the presence of almost 1,000 people.

Today the building is owned by the city of Bad Honnef. His entry in the list of monuments of the city of Bad Honnef took place on September 24, 1984. Since spring 2020 the monument has been renovated.

description

The monument is made of quarry stone . It is divided into a cylinder with an angular cornice and a cross-shaped attachment at the top, on the center of which lies a round metal bowl. The substructure is a circular viewing platform, also with an angular cornice. The meadow below the monument is planted with boxwood in the shape of the iron cross .

A bronze plaque with an inscription and a relief sculpture , borrowed from the Saarbrücken Ulanenkmal from 1913 , depicting a Uhlan on a horse is attached to the monument . Another bronze plaque contains the names of 78 fallen soldiers with the date of death and their rank.
