Johannes Marinus Simon Baljon (born July 5, 1861 in Rotterdam , † May 16, 1908 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch Reformed theologian.

Life

Johannes Marinus Simon was the son of the accountant Simon Albertus Baljon (born January 13, 1836 in Rotterdam; † April 2, 1889 ibid) and his wife Neeltje Dingena de Vries (born July 5, 1839 in Breda; † September 15, 1882 in Rotterdam ). After attending the primary school in his place of birth and the Christian high school in Zetten , he began to study theology on September 23, 1879 at the University of Utrecht . His teachers here included Jacobus Isaac Doedes , Johannes Jacobus van Oosterzee , Nicolaas Beets , Josue Jean Philippe Valeton the Younger , Henrik van Herhaben , Cornelis Marius Francken (1820–1900), Willem Gerard Brill , Pieter de Jong , Cornelis Willem Opzoomer , Egbert Heimerik Lasonder (1831–1886) and Tjeerd Cannegieter (1846–1929). On May 14, 1884 he did his doctorate under Doedes with the thesis De tekst der brieven van Paulus aan de Romeinen, Corinthiërs en Galaten als voorwerp van de conjecturaalcritiek beschouwd (German; The text of the letters of Paul to the Romans, Corinthians and Galatians, as subject of the alleged criticism ) as a doctor of theology.

On August 3, 1884 he was pastor in Nederhemert and in 1888 in the same capacity in Almelo . On October 9, 1895 he took over the professorship for the encyclopedia of theology, early Christian literature and the exegesis of the Old Testament at the University of Utrecht, which he did with the introductory speech De oud-christelijke letterkunde (Utrecht 1895) (German: Die Altchristliche Literatur) started. Baljon also took part in the organizational tasks of the Utrecht University and was rector of the Alma Mater in the academy year 1904/05 . He was also made a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion . Baljon had made a name for himself primarily through his exegetical comments on the New Testament.

Baljon married on June 19, 1884 in Bunnik with Johanna Elisabeth Hart de Ruijter (* May 25, 1859 in Utrecht; † February 11, 1936 there), the daughter of Theodoor Hart de Ruijter (* around 1829 in Amsterdam; † 14. May 1886 Breukelen-Sint Pieters) and his wife Johanna Maria de Graff, who married on August 27, 1857 in Utrecht (* around 1839 in Haarlem; † September 3, 1872 in Utrecht). There are children from the marriage. From the children we know:
