Gottfried Wilhelm Johannes Mildbraed (born December 19, 1879 in Jahnsfelde ( Mark Brandenburg ), † December 24, 1954 in Berlin ) was a German botanist who specialized in mosses , ferns and special seed plants. He is known as the author of a monograph and taxonomic treatment of the Stylidiaceae family from 1908. Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Mildbr. "

Life

Johannes Mildbraed was born in 1879 to the family of Robert and Elizabeth Lenz Mildbraed. He went to school first in Jahnsfelde and later directly in Müncheberg . In 1897 he graduated from high school in Charlottenburg and initially studied linguistics at Berlin University. But he soon switched to the science faculty. Mildbraed received his doctorate in philosophy in 1904. His defense thesis concerned the plant family Podostemaceae . From 1903 he worked as Adolf Engler's assistant in the Botanical Museum Berlin .

In 1907 Mildbraed and his companions set out on their first research expedition to the area of ​​the Central African Rift . This research trip was led by Adolf Friedrich zu Mecklenburg . The way led them through a little known area east of Lake Kivu . The second German Central Africa Expedition, in which Mildbraed also took part, was undertaken between 1910 and 1911 to explore the region of the Upper Nile . During the third expedition, in 1914 during the First World War , Johannes Mildbraed was captured by French troops and deported to France . He did not return to Germany until 1919. Mildbraed did not travel to Africa again until September 17, 1928, this time mainly to the region around Cameroon .

In 1913 he became custodian of the Berlin Botanical Garden. In addition to his research and teaching activities, he also gave lectures or organized tours through the Botanical Garden in Berlin for other academic disciplines and a broader, interested section of the population. In 1920 he married; the couple had three children.

On March 1, 1943, during the Second World War , a large part of the collections of the Berlin Botanical Garden was destroyed in the bombing of Berlin. This included many Mildbraed collectibles.

In 1953 Johannes Mildbraed retired.
