Johannes Ortner (born May 31, 1933 in Vienna ) is an Austrian geophysicist and space manager. From 1974 to 1998 he was managing director of the Austrian Space Agency (ASA) in Vienna.

Life

Johannes Ortner completed his Matura at the Humanist Gymnasium Vienna XIII ( Gymnasium Fichtnergasse ) in 1951 . From 1951 to 1957 he studied electrical engineering and technical physics at the Technical University of Vienna . In 1960 he was at the University of Vienna in Geophysics and Meteorology with a dissertation on the subject of investigations of the Northern Lights using ultrashort radio waves doctorate .

From 1957 to 1962 Johannes Ortner worked at the Geophysical Observatory of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Kiruna , Sweden. From 1960 to 1962 he led the construction of the first Swedish rocket experiments for in-situ investigation of the northern lights .

Between 1962 and 1974 he was employed by COPERS and ESRO . From 1965 he was deputy director for scientific projects at ESLAB (today: ESA's Space Science Department ) in 1968 . From 1968 to 1974 he was Deputy Director of Scientific Programming at ESRO headquarters in Paris.

From 1974 to 1998 he was managing director of the Austrian Society for Space Issues. He made a significant contribution to bringing Austria closer to the European Space Agency ESA. Austria became an associate member in 1981 and a full member in 1987.

He was the founder and from 1975 to 2008 director of the annual European Summer School for Space Research and Technology in Alpbach , Tyrol.

From 1986 to 1988 Johannes Ortner was President of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) .

Johannes Ortner published about 30 publications in the fields of ionospheric and magnetospheric physics, in particular on research into the northern lights.
