Johann Segebarth

Johann Peter Christoph Segebarth (also Johannes Segebarth ; born October 16, 1833 in Wieck a. Darß ; † May 17, 1919 in Prerow ) was a German seaman , local poet and local politician .

Johann Segebarth, son of a seaman, attended elementary school in Wieck auf dem Darß and went to sea from the age of 14. From 1851 he attended the navigation school in Prerow , from 1853 in Stralsund and in the same year passed the tax man's exam . After having been a helmsman on various ships for several years, he had his own ship built in Wieck in 1857, the Bark “Apotheker Diesing”. He led this ship for 25 years and made trips to the Black Sea and North America with it .

After his marriage in 1861 he lived in Prerow. There he finally settled in 1881 or 1882. He devoted himself to local politics and twice became community leader . He was instrumental in the development of Prerow into a bathing resort and was head of the bathing administration. He campaigned for the rail connection to the mainland and argued for this in his book Die Halbinsel Darß-Zingst , published in 1900 . In the same year, however, an application from the municipality of Prerow to the President of the Province of Pomerania was rejected. Construction of the Darßbahn began in 1909 .

In his spare time, Johann Segebarth wrote short stories in Low German . His play De Darßer Smuggler has been performed at the Darß Festival in Wieck since 2003.

After his death, Johann Segebarth was buried in the cemetery at the Seemannskirche in Prerow.
