Erich Gülzow (born March 29, 1888 in Loitz ; † August 16, 1954 in Barth ) was a German teacher and local historian. He wrote writings on the history of Western Pomerania and Rügen . He became known beyond the borders of Pomerania through his publications on Ernst Moritz Arndt .

Life

Erich Gülzow was born in 1888 as the son of the Loitz teacher and chronicler Christian Gülzow (1856–1934) and his wife Marie. After attending grammar school in Stralsund , he studied German , Romance studies and theology at the universities of Freiburg , Grenoble and Greifswald . In 1913 he was honored for his dissertation on Henry of the Türlin doctorate . After taking the examination for the higher teaching post in 1914, he moved to Barth. He was from 1919 as at the local junior high school teacher involved.

During this time he turned to the local history of Western Pomerania and began to publish numerous papers and essays as an author and editor. He initiated the series “Barther Heimatbücherei” and in 1922 published the 800-page “Chronicle of the City of Barth” by the late Wilhelm Bülow, which he had revised. From 1935 to 1939 he published the series “Grimmener Heimatbücherei”. At his suggestion, the Historical Commission for Pomerania published the “ Pomeranian Life Pictures ” in three volumes.

In the 1930s he focused his historical research on Ernst Moritz Arndt, on whose estate he had built a collection since the 1920s. He participated in a historical-critical complete edition of Arndt's work, which was funded by the German Research Foundation and the Universities of Greifswald and Bonn . In 1941 he took early retirement so that he could better devote himself to this task. After the summoning of the project manager Paul Hermann Ruth, who went missing in World War II , Gülzow took over the overall management. In researching Arndt's life and work, he did valuable detailed work, but also put himself in the service of National Socialism .

After the end of the war, numerous research materials on Ernst Moritz Arndt were lost or destroyed. In October 1948 he made an attempt to re-establish the Arndt Society, but was ultimately unsuccessful.
