Johann Speth (born November 9, 1664 in Speinshart , Upper Palatinate , † after 1719 ) was a German organist .

Life

Johann Speth probably received organ lessons from his father or was trained in the music and choir school of the Premonstratensian monastery in his hometown. In 1692 he applied for the post of cathedral organist in Augsburg . For this he put the collection “Ars Magna Consoni et Dissoni. That is: Organic-Instrumental Art-Zier- und Lust-Garten ”, which contains 10 toccatas , 8 magnificats and 3 partitas (series of variations). Speth got the job, whereby he also had to fulfill tasks in the chancellery of the cathedral chapter . The pieces were “by Lorenz Kroninger and Gottl. Goebel's soul. Erben ”published and printed by Lotter. The title possibly alludes to the musicological work by Athanasius Kircher , published in 1650 . Speth's organ works can certainly be placed in a row with the best of this time in southern Germany. They clearly show the influence of the Italian style popular in Augsburg at the time ( Venetian school , Frescobaldi ).
