Johannes Tobei

Johannes Tobei (born March 31, 1930 in Guttstadt , East Prussia, † May 2, 1997 in Berlin ) was a German Catholic clergyman and vicar general of the diocese of Berlin from 1975 to 1992 .

Life

Johannes Tobei studied Catholic theology and philosophy . During his studies he joined the Catholic student association WKSt.V. in 1954 . Unitas Paulus in Freiburg. In 1956 he was ordained a priest and worked from 1957 to 1962 as a chaplain in the parish of St. Ludwig in Berlin-Wilmersdorf. In 1964 he was in Friborg with the dissertation Episcopate and Caritas: The Office ethos of the bishop as Father pauperum the Decree of Gratian to Dr. theol. PhD . In the same year he took on leading tasks in the Caritas Association and was its managing director until 1972 . In 1972 he became pastor of St. Bonifatius in Berlin-Kreuzberg .

In 1975 Pope Paul VI appointed him . to the papal honorary prelate . In the same year Alfred appointed Cardinal Bengsch Tobei as vicar general for the western part of the diocese of Berlin. After the fall of the wall and German reunification , he was responsible for the entire diocese of Berlin until 1992. In 1979 Tobei was appointed cathedral capital. From 1993 until his death he headed the Catholic Office in Berlin and was the contact person for the Brandenburg state government and the Berlin Senate for theological issues. In 1995 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class .

In the obituary of Georg Cardinal Sterzinsky , the Archbishop of Berlin in 1997, it says: "Johannes Tobei was ... a committed, knowledgeable and loyal employee". The Requiem was celebrated on May 9, 1997 in St. Hedwig's Cathedral . Tobei was buried in the Catholic Cathedral Cemetery St. Hedwig in Berlin-Reinickendorf .

Johannes-Tobei-Strasse in Berlin-Bohnsdorf was named after him on July 23, 2002 in a construction site to expand the Falkenberg garden city .
